Tuneful Tuesdays - Movie Songs

Another airing of the Academy Awards has come and gone. More alleged wardrobe malfunctions, who looked hot and who didn't, and more "surprise" winners. Um... aren't they all a surprise? I rarely watch them anymore. For one thing I work for a living and going to bed after midnight when I rise at five in the morning isn't something I do on purpose just to watch a television show. However, I did make an exception last year to see Colin Firth win his well-deserved Best Actor award. :)

But I digress. Today's Tuneful Tuesdays post is dedicated to songs from movies. Some of these won Oscars, but not all of them. Here is a short list of some of the songs I love that are featured in movies:

I Never Dreamed Someone Like You Could Love Someone Like Me ~ Carrie, 1976. I couldn't find the version from the movie on iTunes (sung by Katie Irving) but I did find a similar - and just as pretty - version sung by Regine Valasquez.

The music of ABBA ~ featured in MammaMia! 2008. Yes, the secret is out. I'm a closet ABBA fan from way back...

How Can You Mend a Broken Heart sung by Al Greene ~ Love Actually, 2003. This was the first time I'd heard this version. Until then, I only knew the version sung by the Bee Gees from 1971.

Also featured in Love Actually, Both Sides Now by Joni Mitchell.

Any Dream Will DoJoseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, 1999. I never had the chance to see this on the stage, but I wish I had. The movie version is fabulous!

I'll Make A Man Out Of YouMulan, 1998. The first time I saw this in the theater I didn't realize Donny Osmond provided the singing voice of Shang. The song is powerful, and Donny does a great job with it, proving teenybopper pop stars can have adult singing careers.

Part of Your World ~ The Little Mermaid, 1989. Every time I watch this movie the song still gives me goose bumps.

You Don't Own Me ~ The First Wives Club, 1996. How could you NOT love Bette Midler, Diane Keaton and Goldie Hawn belting out a Lesley Gore tune??

Pretty much every song in Grease, 1978, but especially Summer Nights, Hopelessly Devoted to You and There Are Worse Things I Could Do, sung by the amazing and talented Stockard Channing.

Same with Saturday Night Fever, 1977. Favorite songs from this movie include Staying Alive,  If I Can't Have You, and How Deep Is Your Love.

Forrest Gump, 1994. Now there's a movie with too many fabulous songs to list. My favorites are Running On Empty, Fortunate Son, California Dreamin', What The World Needs Now Is Love, Mrs. Robinson, San Francisco, Everybody's Talkin', Sweet Home Alabama, and Free Bird.

And last but not least (for today's post anyway), the music from The Graduate, 1967. I've already mentioned Mrs. Robinson, but I also love The Sounds of Silence, April Come She Will, and Scarborough Fair.

Did I list any of your favorites? Tell me about songs from movies that you love!

I thought I was the only closet ABBA fan out there. I love their music. Also, I love the music from Greece.

Some other of my favorites are music from "My Fair Lady", "Carman", and music from "Sweeney Todd". What can I say, I love musicals!

I am such a Grease fan. I was 4 when it came out and my mom bought me the 8-track tape of the soundtrack. I had that one, the Bee Gees Saturday Night Fever, and Seasame Street Live.

So on any given day, you could hear either Summer Loving, Greased Lightning, Staying Alive, Jive Taling, or Rubber Duckie, you're the one....coming from the living room when I was playing.

BTW my mom bought me the Grease DVD a couple of year ago for Christmas...came wrapped in a pink lady's jacket...was awesome :)

Good post!
